You moved here for the life. Then the calendar took over.
A lot of the couples who come to us from Hermosa Beach chose this town on purpose. The Strand, the walkability, a life that was supposed to feel less like a grind. Then the jobs followed you here. One of you is on early calls with New York or commuting to El Segundo or Playa Vista, the other is building something of their own, and the weekends are booked before they start. You still like each other. You just can't remember the last real conversation that wasn't about the schedule.
What brings people in usually isn't one big event. It's a slow drift, or a fight that keeps coming back in a new outfit: who's carrying more, whose work gets to come first, why one of you goes quiet and the other pushes harder.
That cycle is what we work on. And because our office is right here in town, a session fits between work and home instead of eating the evening.
What Hermosa Beach couples work on with us
The argument that never actually ends
Feeling more like roommates than partners
Rebuilding trust after an affair
Premarital counseling
Career pressure, travel and big transitions
Lisa Chen & Associates is a group practice of eight clinicians, licensed therapists and supervised associates, founded by Lisa Chen, LMFT. With couples we draw on the Gottman Method, Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO), and Imago Relationship Therapy, and several of us are also trained in EMDR and somatic approaches when an old hurt keeps running the present. Some of our clinicians see couples in Spanish. Our couples therapy page goes deeper on the methods.
We start by getting the full picture. In the first few sessions we see you together, then each of you on your own, then together again, so everyone knows where the relationship holds and where it keeps giving way. The rest of the work is aimed at that specific pattern, with enough structure that the hard conversation can happen without becoming the old fight.
Many of the partners we see are founders, executives and high-achieving professionals. We know what it looks like when someone is excellent at work and running on empty at home, and we work with both of you, not only the one who asked for help.

Weekly sessions or an intensive
Most couples meet weekly for 50 minutes, often in the evening or on a Sunday so neither of you has to leave work early. When travel gets in the way, sessions move online. If you're up against a date (a wedding, a move, a decision about the relationship), a couples intensive gives you a full day or several days of focused work. And if you're engaged and want to get ahead of the patterns, premarital counseling is the earliest version of this work.
Fees
Sessions with Lisa Chen, LMFT
Sessions with associate therapists
Per 50-minute session. Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation. We're out of network and provide monthly superbills you can submit to your insurance.
We also see individuals from Hermosa Beach
Sometimes the thing straining a relationship belongs to one person first: an old injury, a stretch of anxiety, a career that's taken everything. Our therapists see individuals from Hermosa Beach for EMDR, trauma, anxiety and high performer burnout, and some couples do individual work first, or alongside their sessions together.
