Couples Therapy in Los Angeles

It's hard to ask for help with your relationship. Some couples call after a fight they can't get past. Others are kind to each other and get along, but somewhere along the way they stopped really talking. Whatever brings you here, we'll treat it with care and respect.

Weekly couples therapy in Los Angeles, in person or online. $200 a session.

What Los Angeles couples tell us on the first call

Tap the one that sounds closest.

Some couples argue about almost everything. Others have the same fight over and over. Either way, each of you is trying to be heard, and once it heats up past a certain point, neither of you can really hear the other. We start by slowing that down.

Any of our three LA couples therapists is a good fit.

"Couples call for a variety of reasons. There's a fight they haven't been able to resolve. Or a husband calls and says they're nice, they get along, but they've lost the ability to really talk to each other."

What the first couples therapy session is like

We start out more structured than most couples therapists, and that's on purpose. A clear structure helps both of you feel emotionally safe, and lets you know it's OK to bring up hard topics in this room.

Coming in is usually the hardest part, so we take the guesswork out of it. Both of you come to the first session together. Your therapist will ask each of you what you're nervous about and what you're hoping for, and say back what they hear. They'll also point out the goals you already share.

You'll also learn what happens in your body when a fight gets too heated to hear each other, and a few simple ways to calm down. Your therapist will tell you up front that they may interrupt during practice conversations, to keep them on track.

Throughout, your therapist is watching for the patterns between you and making sure the room feels safe for both of you, not just one.

You'll leave with homework and a rough roadmap, so you both know what's coming next.

After that, most couples come weekly for 50 minutes. Couples who want more than an hour a week can book a couples intensive.

Questions couples ask us

Do you have a couples therapy office in Los Angeles?

Yes. Our Pasadena office is at 150 S Los Robles Ave, Suite 850, open Monday to Friday. We also see couples online anywhere in California, and in person in Hermosa Beach for couples closer to the South Bay.

How much does couples therapy cost in Los Angeles?

Couples sessions with Rebekah, Chandra or Elizabeth are $200 for 50 minutes. We're out-of-network and provide superbills, and many Los Angeles employers' PPO plans pay back a portion. The first 20-minute consultation is free.

What kind of couples therapy do you use?

All three of our LA couples therapists are trained in the Gottman Method, which looks at how couples handle conflict, trust and connection. Depending on the therapist, they also use Emotionally Focused Therapy and psychodynamic work to get at what's driving the same argument.

Does online couples therapy work as well as in person?

For a lot of couples, yes. You get the same therapist and the same structure, and you skip the drive across LA. Some couples start in person and switch to online when life gets busy.

Do you work with gay and LGBTQIA+ couples in Los Angeles?

Yes. Rebekah and Chandra both trained in LGBTQIA+ affirmative care, and all three therapists work with couples of every makeup, including queer and bi+ partners.

Is couples counseling the same as marriage counseling?

For the most part, yes. People use the two terms for the same work. Couples counseling is for any committed couple, married or not, and marriage counseling is the same work with married couples. We see both, along with couples preparing for marriage.

What if my partner doesn't want to come?

We only begin couples therapy when both of you have agreed to come, and we don't meet with one partner alone as part of couples work. If your partner isn't ready yet, you can start individual therapy with one of us and see where things go from there.
